MANUELA - GIRL, Principal role, Diverse origins, French Speaking

Manuela is a studious and calm teenager who started acting out. She is attentive to her community’s needs, easily drawing the sympathy of her peers and developing friendships. But she is now left to experience the torments of teenage years, and started committing unpredictable and impulsive actions, like she never has before.

KARINE – WOMAN, Principal role, (Depends on Manuela’s casting) – Manuela’s Mother, French Speaking
Camera Age: 40 years old

Karine is a 41-year-old woman, a widow, bringing up her teenage daughter and her young son, on her own. Karine is a « superwoman », a strong and affectionate woman, not afraid to be bold and audacious when needed. But since her husband death, she is at the end of her rope, and struggles with this new challenge that befell her.

KIM - GIRL - Principal role, Asian, French Speaking
Camera Age: 16 years old

Kim is a teenage girl of Chinese origin, who lives with her two parents and her twin brother, Patrick. She is rebellious, a hacker in the making, not afraid to speak her mind, with a strong sense of retort. Over the years, Kim also became very jealous of her brother and is dominated by a spirit of fraternal competition.

PATRICK - BOY - Principal role, Asian, French Speaking
Camera Age: 16 years old

Patrick is a teenage boy, of Chinese origin. He’s Kim’s twin brother and couldn’t be any more different than his sister. He’s a solitary “geek”. He doesn’t like conflict, he’s very thoughtful and extremely smart. He’s under a lot of pressure from his parents who want him to take over the family business.

MATTHEW - BOY - Principal role, No Ethnic preference – QUEER (Speaks French with an English accent)
Camera Age: 18 years old

Matthew is a youngster and a queer, who grew up in West Toronto, in a very wealthy family. He is a flamboyant and colourful young man who evolved in a very conservative environment and always felt misunderstood and not accepted for who he is.

MRS. GONZALES – WOMAN - Principal role, of Latin Origin (has a thick Spanish accent when she speaks French)
Camera Age: 30-35 years old

Mrs. Gonzales is a new immigrant to Canada and a mother to a toddler. Her husband is still living abroad. She is alone and lives under difficult precarious circumstances. She’s facing language barriers, but she’s also the victim of social injustices (not knowing what her rights are in Canada).

LIAM - BOY, Supporting Role - (Depends on Manuela’s casting) – Manuela’s Brother, French Speaking
Camera Age: 5 years old

At 5 years old, Liam is the breath of fresh air for his family. He’s playing and having fun wherever he goes. He imagined and created his own universe, away from the pressures of the adults’ world. He’s too young to understand what’s really happening around him, but old enough to feel the tension that surrounds him. Liam represents the last vestiges of childhood innocence.

SIMON – MAN - Supporting Role - No Ethnic preference – Athletic shape “6 packs”, French Speaking 

Camera Age:  20-25 years old

 

Simon is a construction worker, a very handsome man who could make the cover of a magazine. However, his past experiences left him with a bitter aftertaste, and despite his young age, he’s rather skeptical of the future. 

 

MRS. SMITH - WOMAN - Supporting Role - No Ethnic preference - Speaking French with a thick English accent 

Camera Age:  80 years old

 

Mrs. Smith is Manuela’s neighbour. She’s a woman of great kindness and an “over-indulgent” grandmother. Despite her slightly diminishing independence, she’s also not afraid to speak up her mind and can be very direct.

 

MRS. GISÈLE - WOMAN - Supporting Role - No Ethnic preference , French Speaking

Camera Age:  35 - 50 years old

 

She’s a teacher in a French school in Toronto. She’s eccentric and colourful person, and passionate about her students and teaching.

 

TENANT 1 (Rob) - MAN - Supporting Role - No Ethnic preference - English Speaking 

Camera Age:  45-50 years old

Attributes: A little grumpy and negative, Rob sounds older than he actually his.
